Nanded Area Guide: Localities, Roads, Rail and Talukas

Nanded is the headquarters of Nanded district in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, administered under the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Division. The city is governed as Nanded Waghala, and it is a district administrative centre, a divisional railway headquarters, and a university town — Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University is here.

It is also a significant pilgrimage destination: Takht Sachkhand Shri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib, one of the five Takhts of Sikhism, is in Nanded, and it brings visitors from Punjab and across India throughout the year.

The Godavari runs through the city, with the Vishnupuri barrage to the west. Nanded taluka covers only 403 km² but is by a wide margin the most densely populated in the district, at 1,785 people per km² against a district average of 319.

The areas below are the ones people name for where they live or where they are going. This is not an administrative list, and it is not exhaustive — it is the practical vocabulary of the city.

Deglour Naka, where our own centre is, takes its name from the road running south out of the city towards Degloor. Several of Nanded’s junctions work like this — named for where the road goes rather than for the neighbourhood itself — so the name tells you the direction.

Any address you give will be more useful with a landmark attached.

Rail is more useful than road for several journeys here, and it is consistently underused by visitors. The Nanded railway division of South Central Railway is headquartered in the city.

Coming from Dharmabad or Umri in the east, rail is often simpler than road: both sit on the same Secunderabad–Manmad line that serves Nanded. From the northern talukas — Bhokar, Himayatnagar, Kinwat — the Adilabad branch connects you to Mudkhed Junction, and Mudkhed connects onward to Nanded.

Four rivers matter here: the Godavari, Manjra, Manyad, Penganga.

• Godavari — runs through Nanded city, with the Vishnupuri barrage to the west, and continues east past Dharmabad towards the Telangana boundary.
• Manjra — comes in from the south-west and makes its way towards the Godavari through the district’s south-eastern lowlands.
• Penganga — defines the northern belt towards the Yavatmal boundary. Sahasrakund waterfall is on the Penganga; public sources associate it with the Sahastrakund village area in Himayatnagar taluka and also describe access from Islapur in neighbouring Kinwat. It is the district’s best-known monsoon destination.
• Manyad — the fourth of the district’s main rivers.

Nanded district borders Telangana and Karnataka, along with the Yavatmal, Hingoli, Parbhani, Latur districts of Maharashtra. The towns below are the ones that come up most often in journeys to and from Nanded. All are outside Nanded district.

We deliberately do not publish fixed kilometre figures between towns. Road distance changes with the route taken, and public sources disagree widely. Every page below gives the direction and the actual road or rail corridor instead, plus a live directions link that reflects current conditions.

A direction that works is built in this order.

1. Name the naka or the chowk. Junctions are the city’s coordinate system. “Deglour Naka” locates you immediately in a way a street name will not.
2. Then the landmark. A gym, a school, a temple, a hospital, a petrol pump. “Opposite Citizen Gym” is more precise in practice than any house number.
3. Then the direction of travel. Which road you are coming in on decides which side of the junction you end up. Coming from Degloor or Mukhed you reach Deglour Naka without crossing the city; coming from Ardhapur or the north you cross it.
4. Skip the distance. Nobody in Nanded will thank you for “2.4 km”. Give the landmark and let their maps app do the arithmetic.
